What Makes Me a Conqueror

Each of us has conquered a particular among of things in life that have been difficult or challenging for us whether an end to a life we love or an end of a relationship.  I for one have had my share of things conquered among them cancer and an end of a relationship that needed to end a long time ago. Even so there is for us a grieving that has to happen even when we conquer a situation that makes us fall down and requires that we get up again, "with a little help from my friends".  Life is going to deal us some stuff that is going to be hard to not just digest but difficult to understand why.  As much as we might think ourselves null and void of such matters of the heart and soul, we are all vulnerable and we are all to fall one day.  The difference is whether we get up or we stay on the ground.  Bitterness, hate, anger, jealousy and even pain leaves little left to feel or do or so it seems.  Yet we seem to come out of that kind  of darkness and still...

Be A Child: Let It Flow

Today my daughter brought the kids over to stay with me for the remainder of the week and the upcoming weekend.  I love being a grandpa and being loved by these two love bugs that love without conditions.  I feel so fortunate to be that person who gets all that nurturing and attention from two loving little girls who have so much love to give.  I want to cherish every moment of this time with them watching "My Litttle Pony" and chatting with my eldest granddaughter about school and friends now that she is 13.  I find myself playing with Legos and the match card game, enjoying being present with them and accessing my child like characteristics.  It is so much fun just lettiing go of the stresses of life and getting lost in their simple and beautiful world. Children have a way of bringing us to the core of our joy and innocence.  They are there to remind us all that we can enjoy the little things in a big way.  They bring us to a place of understanding...

My Five Agreements

Don Miguel Ruiz a wonderful spiritual leader of our time wrote the book "The Four Agreements".  Those agreements make a lot of sense to me and to many who have read this small but powerful text about how to approach life by as he states: being impeccable with your word, never taking things personally, doing our best and not making assumptions.  I would agree that these four agreements in life could certainly make life a little less complicated and a lot happier for all the obvious reasons.  After many years of having read his four agreements I have come up with my own five agreements and these are them: 1. Tell the Truth Always tell the truth.  Don't BS anyone for any reason and don't make up stories just to make yourself important or bigger than what you are.  We tend to think that the little white lies are OK but I think those white lies lead to the larger ones and our lies are compounded.  I love Iyanla Vanzant because when she coaches people she cons...

Ageless Living

By now there must be a few readers convinced that I am obsessed with this idea of being ageless and all the comes with the idea that at any age we are beautiful.  I especially think this when I look around me at others who are obviously younger who look spent and worn and others who are older who look impeccable and sharp.  There is something about looking crisp and sharp at any stage of our life, yet what I think is truly important is how we live.  Do we live a life that honors us or do we live one that is riddled with anxiety and speed?  Do we live a life that is kind and loving or do we live a fast life where we are so busy we cannot think about or make time to tend to our sacred self.  Yes, our sacred self!  We are after all that important and that worth the effort that we should be the first thing we take care of.  I was watching a film on creativity and in it one of the persons shared the importance of honoring our creative source and taking the ...

Ageless: Defying Age

There are a lot of creams and lotions that are labeled as "age defying".  Since I am not a cosmetologist I won't be talking about any age defying products.  The products that I have used on my face and body have been varied but there is one that I love the most and makes the most sense to me: olive oil.  Besides olive oil there are truly some very natural ways to stay healthy and look great at any age.  I am sixty and although I don't believe in age at all I am convinced that one can stay fabulous at any time of one's life whether you are fifty, sixty, seventy or eighty.  In fact there are a group of women in NYC who were followed around by a photographer all of which were sixty to ninety for a book on style that I have sitting on my cocktail table called yes: "Advanced Style".  This vibrant man decided that he would hit the streets and find the fashionable, hip, cool, chick women of style who were ageless.  There is even a documentary out called "A...

Ageless Living

I have been on a bit of a roll about the notion of aging and my own belief that we are ageless.  Some might look upon this idea of mine as being in denial when in fact even if that is true I am completely OK with that.  Denial can be a lovely thing and can serve us in wondrous ways.  I say that because like my with health opportunity (referred to some as cancer) denial has served me just great.  Age is a topic that most of us would rather not talk about in mixed company and unfortunately a topic that I might even say is a "hot topic" as the ladies on "The View" might call it.  It is a topic that is only hot because we make it uncomfortable for people who are "aging" and don't respect the wisdom and the beauty that comes with living longer and we are living longer that's for sure. As I continue to dialog around this topic in my blogs I realize that I have more and more to say about it the more I ponder it.  Age?  What does that mean?  Why is it s...

Life After Sixty Living Agelessly

Just yesterday I was chatting with a family of four and shared that I was sixty.  The daughter who was sixteen told me she could not believe I was sixty to which I recited my birthday and year I was born.   She went further to say that I looked like I was around forty and I of course thanked her and wanted to buy her a new car.  The truth about age is that we are ageless really.  We are ageless because we decide it so not because we are not aging but because I think we can be ageless.  We have all heard it before: "we are as old as we feel".  That is so true and in each individual case you are as old as you think or like me you are ageless and timeless.  No one has an expiration date nor must we either be a certain way, dress a particular way or act in a certain manner because now we are sixty versus when we were forty.  Staying young looking is really not about how we are but rather how we behave.  Behaving like we are sixty or as though we ...
