Thanksgiving
Today I would like to share my experience on Thanksgiving with my family. My daughter Taina Luz invited us all to her and her husband's home. The food was beyond delicious and as usual I ate way too much of it. We celebrated my ex-wife's birthday at the same time. My daughter's surprised her with a cake and sang the birthday song. My granddaughter Mia sang it again solo for her grandmother who she adores. After she finished singing we noted that Lucy was crying and she immediately shared her fond memories of when her parents celebrated her birthday on Thanksgiving day each year. Her father is the person that I refer to as my father in law who passed away very recently and her mother died about four years ago of cancer. At that moment I could not think of anything more special than being with my daughter's, family members and my ex-wife and good friend. It was even more amazing to me that I was there with my current husband Cary and that everyone in my family embraces him and treats him with love and respect, including Lucy who I was married to for over ten years. I feel a true sense of gratitude around the fact that I was married to some one who I still love and that loves me. I feel even more grateful that she was the person who made it possible for me to have two incredible daughters and two beautiful granddaughters. This is a woman who shared her father with me and who never let me go. This is a person who has honored and respected me.
When it came time for Lucy to open the card from me she read every word and was emotional once again. Her vulnerability touched me in a way that I cannot ever express in words. I felt lifted and my heart sang. As I sit here writing this story and sharing this event my eyes are tearing up just thinking about all the people who have loved me and supported me all these years. I think that this is truly what makes Thanksgiving so special and what makes it even more special is the fact that I am still surrounded by people who chose to continue to be family, like Lucy, her son, her nephew and her brother. I am in deep appreciation for this day and what I hope is that all of you experienced some of that same love from your friends and family.
I want to end this by sharing that when we are in gratitude we are in our optimum joy. I also feel like when we are willing to be vulnerable we open that path to healing. Whether we have two friends, one family member or even have had to make our own family, being in gratitude for what we do have is the key to heightening our level of happiness. I for one have experienced how fortunate I am to have what I have in my life and the people that I have in my life. Today has been a gift for me and I wish that gift for all of you.
