My Mission 11/26/13
There is a man here who has some sort of illness where he can barely walk. He walks with a cane struggling like crazy to stand and when he can't he has learned to drop to his knees with a form of grace. He is a handsome man likely about 50 and I am sure others would think he should be using a wheel chair. Some would think he just wants to get attention because he should be using a walker at least. We all look at him and completely get it. That is the difference when life hands you lemons and you take them and do your very best. This man has already inspired me and he arrived on Sunday. He is already calling me by my name, his eyes of blue twinkling and his mouth smiling above it all. That my beloved sister is what really matters. We get so tied up in all this other stuff and the truth is that we need to take a long hard look at this man and then ourselves. What are we doing with our lives? Are we fighting as hard as this man or shall we all wait until we have some health situation to wake up? I love you Pat and I have to tell you the truth. it is your time my beloved to awaken and you have all the talent, wisdom and love it takes to get there. You just have to put the focus on yourself.
Love Elliott is a man here at OHI who has some sort of illness where he can barely walk. He walks with a cane struggling intently to stand and when he can't he has learned to drop to his knees with some form of grace wherever he needs to. He is a handsome man likely about 50. I am sure some would think he should be using a wheel chair. Others may think he just wants to get attention because he could be using a walker and possibly be more mobile and agile, but here in this safe, loving space we all look at him and completely get it. This is a man who refuses to cave into his limitations and refuses to be in a wheel chair. This is a man who is a warrior on a mission to prove to himself that the wheel chair is too much of a crutch that he won't succumb to. That is the difference when life hands you lemons, yet you continue to challenge yourself to take the path that requires more of you. This man with his eyes of blue twinkling and his mouth smiling forces himself through what looks like an insurmountable task and every time I look at him I am humbled beyond what words can say. I think to myself: Elliott my beloved this is what really matters. You get so tied up in all this other stuff and the truth is that you need to take a long hard look at this man and then Elliott, look at yourself! What are you doing with your life and your struggle? Where is your faith and courage? Are you willing to fight as hard as this man and can you see the meaning behind not using the wheelchair but rather using what you have left? God seems to be saying: it is your time my love to awaken and you have all the talent, wisdom and love it takes to get there. You just have to put the focus on yourself, you just have to look closely at yourself and believe.
I often say there are no accidents or coincidences. This man is my teacher. This man is here to reflect back to me what I need to see and perhaps what I have not been willing to see. He may be asking me to take an inventory of myself. He is likely here to teach me some courage and faith. Here is man whom some may say has been bought to his knees literally but who has not been defeated. A man who can teach me about life and it's tribulations. One that makes me want to make a checklist of gratitudes and know my own gifts. He is demonstrating in his actions what most of us give lip service to. From him I am learning to be more light hearted, laugh more and not take myself so freaking serious.
