With the holidays approaching many of us are thinking about the holidays and some of us are stressing about expenditures. For too many the question: "How much is this holiday going to cost me, is a legitimate one".
A lot of the holiday stress can be relieved in some truly easy ways. Here's four of them:
A lot of the holiday stress can be relieved in some truly easy ways. Here's four of them:
1. Surrender and enjoy it:
Decide here and now that you are going to do your very best to enjoy the holidays. Make plans to go events that are inspired by the holidays. Take the time and surrender to the festivities and attend a few parties you may get an invitation to. Surrendering is the best way to just enjoy the holidays by saying yes and making the best of it. Turning it into a positive experience will help you to view the experience in a new and refreshing manner. In this way you can enjoy it instead of stressing yourself out.
2. Don't stress, spend less:
Make a conscious decision to stay inside a budget and spend less than you have ever spent in the past. Look for sales and buy only what you can comfortably afford. In fact make sure to plan early and go to the first sales after Thanksgiving when some stores offer 50-70%. Large department stores want to get you in to buy early and will entice customers with some exceptionally good pricing. In general you must be the one to be realistic about spending and buying what you can afford, not what others want from you, even if they are your young children. In fact, you can even wait until after the holidays to buy that one expensive gift for your child and save it for their birthday. In this way you can ensure that you may get it on sale.
3. Access your creative side:
Making gifts can be truly inexpensive. I have made decorative pillows, earrings, scarves, children's clothing for a fraction of what it would normally cost in a store. Even those of us who don't know it have a whimsical creative side and can make some great gifts that others will cherish. Making a gift is likely one of the best compliments we can make to someone we gift that unique creation with.
4. Take time off work:
If possible take a couple of days off of work. Whether they are your own mental health days, personal business days or accumulated vacation days, take some time to make the planning easier and much more graceful. The objective of taking some days off for shopping or preparations is to ease the stress and to better enjoy your time and time with family. By taking a few days off you are gifting yourself and your family members.
Whatever you do this holiday season make your sanity first. Have the intention from the onset that the holidays will be different this year, in a good way. Become positive about it and tell yourself you are going to enjoy every moment by taking out the things that don't matter. Take the time to relax and bring in the serenity you will need to address any of the past dysfunctional family antics and by all means don't buy into the idea that you have to spend a lot to enjoy it a lot.
