Designing A Beautiful Home
It seems silly to be writing about this subject if you have ever been to my home. The truth is that I have made a beautiful home by listening to my inner voice that has always helped me to create a beautiful space. Over time what I have learned about design is that nothing is written in stone and that now more than ever one can mix it all up and that is exactly what I do. I love modern pieces mixed with contemporary pieces next to traditional ones. My home is a mixture of things that I love and that are in harmony and I feel comfortable. I wanted a space that above all meant something to me and when I get up in the morning I can look up, down, left or right and I see things that invite me to sit down and chill and accessories that elicit a good feeling inside of me. From the decorative pillows embroidered with the words "dream" and "love" to the Noguchi cocktail table which the original is displayed at the Chicago Art Institute. But I digress. So let me begin sharing my ideas on designing a beautiful home:
1. Think sacred loving space:
When you are selecting things for your home think about how important your living space is to you. Make an intentional decision to make it into a space that you love and that loves you back.
2. Select accessories that mean something to you:
When you are picking a vase, candlesticks, pillows, bedding or a statue make your decision based on meaning. What does this particular vase or candle or tea light holder elicit in you? It can be something that is playful and it can be next to something that is spiritual in nature. Your accessories and art really say a lot about you and what you love.
3. Lighting is Everything:
I am unsure as to who may have said this first but I feel like I said it second. By the time you get home from work you will likely need some lighting around all the rooms in your home that are both functional and add to the beauty of your home. Lighting that is beautiful is lighting that is soft and makes each room look romantic and tranquil. Don't forget floor lights that beam up behind a bed, sofa or plant. It shoots up like a ray of sun and looks stunning at night. I also love dimmers on switches or on the actual table lamp or pendant. Lighting adds a lot of beauty to a room.
4. The Major Items:
Your major items in your home like the sofa, bed, dressers, desk, cocktail table, ottomans, sofa chairs, table, dining chairs, stools, end tables, and audio cabinet should be carefully selected so that each room flows into the others. It should not look like the person who lives in your bedroom is not the same person who lives in your living room. The style used in one room should in some way be used in all the rooms. Colors are the obvious way to marry one room to the rest of them.
5. Add a Pop:
I have used bright red, bright orange or bright blue as a pop of color in rooms that are based on white, tan or off white. Adding a pop of color in your accessories is a way to make your space look just a little playful, fun and inviting.
6. Wall coloration:
I know it is tempting to use very vibrant colors and I am not totally against it. I think color says a lot about you when it comes to the walls on your home. But the most important thing is that color elicits feelings like: warmth, serenity, anxiousness, laughter and more. Chose the colors in your home in accordance with your decor and consider pastel colors because they combine well with many things in a room. I love pastel colors and colors that are neutral because again it matches with more things.
No matter what colors you select do so with the thought that these are going to be around you for a while. Make them colors that elicit joy for you. Like the soft greens in a room with a Buddha and dark wood bed with a mod lamp, picking a color that combines the energy and style of a room will result in a beautiful place to sleep, eat and relax.
