Heal Yourself Dancing
For a little while in my life I taught Salsa dance. I could feel the energy of the people I taught to dance and witnessed the smiles on their faces. One day a woman who had been divorced by her husband cried while she danced with me. It was in that moment that I realized how healing dance was and just how much it meant to her and to others. I recall another woman saying to me "Salsa dancing changed my life". I was floored by that and other comments like these by women who seemed to have found something profound in dance.
I know for sure that in my life dance has healed me and made me feel more whole. When I dance salsa I feel like the little boy in me is smiling and there are even times when I am dancing where I literally laugh. The lyrics and the beat take me to some imaginary place inside of me. It is for me a magical reaction of love and laughter.
My best friend who I will call Edith learned to dance with me and met her partner at one of her lessons. I will never forget how persistent she was. She came every week and she was not satisfied with being mediocre, she wanted to be great at it and enjoy it. I remember her comments one of them being "I am a white girl" and "What can you expect". Each time I would negate them and each time she would smile with such joy. I never once joined her in that commentary and excuse. I knew she was destined to dance salsa and create her own style. To my amazement she not only learned the dance, she put a whole new spin on it. To this day I smile when I think of those days.
Dance is a spiritual experience because our body is a spiritual entity. When you dance you bring the spiritual part of you forward. It elicits joy and excitement much like when a child receives a new toy. It is for many a healing agent for these reasons and more. When the body moves so does the soul. When the body interacts with another one in a dance it is like a conversation without words and from the center of our spirit where the heart resides.
I will never be able to fully explain what movement does for me. I feel this tingling sensation in my body and mind. I feel free of any issues that may have been trapping me. I release the ego and I surrender to the movements. I enjoy it and I can see when I look around me at others who are dancing I can see the joy multiply. This is healing at it's best.
Heal yourself through movement. Put the music on that you love and move to it. Make up your own free style of dance. Give yourself the opportunity to feel the sensations in your body as you move. IF the music feels emotional allow yourself to cry. Heal your heart with the vibrations of the music. Heal yourself by surrendering and dancing as if no one is watching. Because no one is.
