A House-A Home?
I am literally shocked to see how some people live. I will not soon forget the horror and utter dismay that came over me when I visited someone's home who'd I had been dating for a year where the very first thing that happened was that my foot went through one of the steps going down to her "condo", and I use the word loosely. Nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to see when I opened the door with the key I was given. And to be honest I should have run fast in the other direction ASAP when she had no logical explanation for a toilet that was literally brown inside instead of white and cabinet doors that were hanging off one hinge and missing. As insane a thought as this may be there are many functional citizens who live like this and who in my estimation do not understand the difference between a house (the structure and walls) and a home (a sacred safe clean space that we love). I think that part of this is priviledged upbringing while most of it is about how we don't care for our home because we don't care about much of anything. While most people will deny that the mess they call home has a serious causation, the reality is that living like a pig means you consider yourself slightly above pig status.
Each and every decision you make around home is one that should be taken seriously and given much thought. Each person who buys a house should consider that there are loving actions one must practice in order to maintain a home and not just live inside a structure. Here are some ways to perceive your home and make a house, the structural part, a home, the loving entities:
Artifacts:
Everything in your home should be viewed more like an artifact than a decoration or furniture. What you fill your home inside with is at the very core of how you will feel in it, celebrate in it and enjoy it. It is not enough just to have a bed to sleep on or a sofa to sit on. It is not enough to simply have a vase to place water in and add flowers to a room. Everything that you select should be selected with care and should express something of who you are, and I think everyone is beautiful. The objects in a room including the art should be a reflection of the person you are inside and celebrate that person full and without fear. Colored pencils placed inside a glass jar or soft colored pencil case is how one turns every item into an artifact, something worth having and something worth showing when we deem it. If mermaids speak to you then get a depiction of a mermaid to place in your bathroom or living area. Whatever expresses who you are and what you love becomes a part of your daily world and one where you like spending time in.
Color:
Some of us are OK with white walls and I have seen it work and look stunning, even in cases where the furniture is mainly white upholstered with a smattering of chrome, glass, wood and the like. But for most of us color elicits a feeling. Choosing a color or colors that resonate for you takes time but it is worthwhile. I love blue and aqua and have surrounded my space with two colors by Sherwyn Williams: Waterfall (a lively but soft Aqua) and Canvas (a sand like color). The objective for me was about feeling the water and sand around me all the time and since my home backs up to a large pond it looks great inside a very light filled home. Color is very important and I would vote more for the lighter colorations than deep dark ones on the walls. This keeps the room open for bright colored objects or pillows. It is a fact that color elicits a feeling like red elicits excitement and speaks to the exotic side of our being. Color is important and while we may be tempted to select lots of colors two in a home is about enough if not three at the most. If the woodwork is not impeccable then painting it white is always refreshing and will make a home britghter and seem newer.
Love:
If you don't put love in your home it will be noticed. Just as the person I mentioned before had a lack of, love is an essential component of making a house a home. Our home is a home because love and thought has been put into it. This means keeping it tidy and organized, not just beautiful. Loving your home means that you show it gratitude for how it serves you and your family by keeping up with it and certainly not trashing it. When we love our home and we act on that love with our daily actions our home will always be a place we don't mind being inside of for hours or even days. Love is that one part of the recipe we cannot ever forget to put in the mix of what we call our home.
Sacred Space:
I look at my bedroom as a sacred space, probably because my grandmother and mother shared that thought with me. A bedroom is a private domain in our home and defining it as sacred means that no one gets to come into our home that can potentially violate it or leave bad energy inside of it. Making our home a sacred space is really about knowing just how important a home is. It is sacred. Every part of it is sacred.
