Don't Take It Personal
I believe that of the many thngs I have struggled with the one thing that has been challenging is not taking things personal. People will say things, they will share their opinions and at times say negative things to us. What we must know is not to personalize what others think of us or say to us because in reality we know who we are. Every time we take something personal we end up feeling badly about what does not belong to us, but how do we overcome that? Here's what I think:
1. Know who you are.
When we are clear and confident about who we are it is much less likely that someone else will make you feel badly or feel anything that is not true. We know who we are when we work on ourselves and do the things that help us stay positive and clear of negative energy. Doing what you need to do is the best defense against the words or deeds of others. Think of yourself as a gift and know that you are more than how someone thinks of you. Know who you are and nothing will penetrate you.
2. Know the source.
It is essential that we know the source of other's criticism of us and understand that their views are a reflection of their own pain. When we understand that we don't make their pain our pain and their truth our truth. Also, we must know who these people are and when we do we see that they are sometimes people who either believe they have a right to tell us who we are or are not or they are people who we may want to consider releasing, ending our ties with. The source of darkness should always be considered in understanding that many times they are people who are on the outside looking in and who lack compassion.
3. Build your strength.
When we are strong and working on our own stuff we become much less affected by outer influences or other people. Building our own personal strength takes time and effort but it's worthwhile and gives us the reservoir to endure whatever comes our way. Others can find fault in us but when we are building ourselves up and maintaining our spiritual, emotional and physical self we much safer from the effects of negativity and the people who want to give us their pain. We build our strength by getting the exercise we need, eating healthy foods, getting the rest we need, meditating or praying and getting the emotional support we need. a healthy person cannot be swayed by public opinion.
4. Have and follow a mantra/self-agreement.
The mind is complex and what we know is that what we feed it will become our reality. Mantras are a way to feed our mind and to keep the bugs of life away. A mantra begins with I am... It is a statement that is a message to our inner self that is powerful, meaningful and helps us to get out of the dark spots we often find ourselves in. I love a mantra like: "I am peaceful and whole and I know that who I am is a gift to the universe". Although we may not immediately think that a mantra like this one will help, the use of it will be telling of the effect it has on our subconscious. "I am happy, healthy and whole and living in this moment" is another one that is effective for me. It validates where I want to be and deletes negative thoughts or negative influences.
There are ways to fight off, wart off and shake off all the personal opinions and comments of others. Understanding that the critics are not always in their highest thinking helps us to understand that their thoughts are not ones we own and surely not our truth. The main thing about life is to make sure that we do the self-loving acts for ourselves and maintain a regimen of healing like prayer/meditation. Our bodies are temples and we must always be in a constant endeavor to build it, making it strong and less susceptible to the elements.
Here are some activity questions to consider:
1. What am I doing to tend to my emotional. physical and spiritual self? (be specific) And what do I need to do? (list them)
2. What is my go to mantra? (write it)
3. Who am I? (write about it)
4. Who are the influential people in my life? How do I allow them too much power? What do I need to do in this area of my life?
5. Is it time to release someone or something in my life that is toxic? Why? How can I do this with grace and with compassion?
