Getting the Job

Continued:

Arrive early not Late:
Getting to your interview early is a statement that you are a person who makes sure you get to work on time.  It tells others that you are responsible and that in fact you are willing to arrive early if needed.  In companies where you are going to make a salary regardless of the hours you work, they are looking for someone who is willing to go the extra mile and work the extra hours when it is busy season.  Being late also makes a statement and believe me when I tell you it is likely one that will be a sure path to not getting the job.  If you have a legitimate reason for being late, call ASAP and apologize  when you arrive late.  I say give yourself plenty of extra time to arrive so that if something happens you are still on time.

Be aware of your body:
Stay tuned in to your body and what it may be saying.  Sit up straight and maintain a great posture.  Be careful not to nod a no when you are saying yes.  Don't mess around with your clothing or move about as it gives the impression that you are easily distracted or become nervous easily.  A man sitting with his legs open too wide is a sign of arrogance for example so be careful to sit in a way that is more conservative and acceptable.  Slouching your back or leaning on your hand with your elbow on a table for example is poor body language.  Look at the person when you are speaking and do not look away at any time.  Stay focused.

Shine your shoes:
I mention this one because many men showed up to interviews with me with dirty or less then shiny shoes.  Some were wearing shoes they should have thrown out.  Shoes are where a lot of people miss the boat and it is important that you wear shoes that are relatively new and are pristine.   Shoes are the part of your outfit that make the outfit complete.  If you are a female it is usually a good idea to wear pumps that are not super high and look business like.

Don't forget to smile:
Smile as often as possible as this is a sign that you are a happy person who will bring joy to the workplace.  If you appear to serious the person interviewing you may think you will bring gloom to the workplace instead.  Keep a natural smile on your face and make sure to stay positive the entire time.  Practice this in a mirror so that you do not appear fake.

Be enthusiastic:
Stay up and peppy.  Show up with an enthusiastic demeanor and be excited.  Make a comment like: "I am so excited to meet you Ms. Brown".  End the interview with an enthusiastic hand shake and say something like: "this is exciting thank you".  Being excited at the prospect of working for someone shows them that you may be a person who will bring that enthusiasm to the workplace and everyone likes an exciting person.

Don't Look or be rigid:
Don't look or act rigid.  Don't be super serious as if the interview or getting the job were life and death.  The person interviewing you will read it and become concerned about how you would be at a job and how you would show up every day.  They will be concerned that you are inflexible and not able to go with the flow when needed.  Being too serious or rigid makes a bad impression, one mainly of concern.
