Why Serve?

I am always a little shocked when I find out that someone has never volunteered for anything nor have they any inclination to do so. There is really not any judgment on my part but rather a feeling around how wonderful it is to serve and how rewarding it is to serve others and to give of what we have, talents or money.  I feel that in my life I have been so blessed to have what I have that the logical thing to do is to give of myself.  I just never thought about it any other way other than that this is my human agreement.  Still there are many people out there that don't feel any obligation to give or to serve others and that of course is their proactive.

There are many reasons why I can think of to give of oneself to others, here are some:

Giving to others gives us a compassionate heart and giving from that place brings us joy. It reminds us what we are here for which is to love each other and lift each other up.  This can only result in a positive feeling about ourself and about our relationship to others.

Giving to others can bring us light and in fact create a good karma to our life.   Good will manifest in our life because we are giving to others and the universe will give back.  My grandmother always said: What we do here we pay for here.  What she meant was we will see the results of our actions before we die and in our life time.

Giving monetarily can duplicate our income and many times we see that by donating money to an organization that helps others makes it so that we seem never to be short of money.  Again the universe and Source blesses us even more because we are willng to give and not come from a place of lack but rather a place of abundance.  The more we give the more we stay in a place of abundance. We have all heard the stories about giving 10 percent to the church and people who did so even when they could not afford to and as a result their income increased or they were blessed with a large lump sum of money.

Serving is what we were brought here to do.  Since we are all related in God's eyes then it makes sense that we serve one another and give to others when we see the need in others.  Leaving an anomomous donation to a family in the church we attend that we know are struggling will make a difference in their lives and ours.  There is really no universal law that says it better than the one that we are brothers and sisters in God's eyes.  For this reason alone we should be willing to serve.

Activity/Action Step:
Decide on a good cause that you think you could give a check to each month and begin to give to that cause.  Take a mental inventory of your talents and decide how and when you will share that talent with others.  For some of us that means playing music in church or singing for a fund raiser.  For others it may be to teach English.  Whatever your talent is, it can likely be turned into a lovely way to serve others and sharing it will bring you nothing but pure happiness.  I want to challenge everyone who is reading this blog to consider giving with an open heart.  You will see that once you live from the place of giving you will be lifted in ways that you cannot imagine.
