Overcome Your Fears By:
It is not easy to overcome our fears, especially when they are ones that have followed us for years. We have options and one of them is to face them and the other is to ignore them. When we decide not to face them it is likely that we will experience that fear again. Sooner or later we end up finding ourselves in a situation where we will have to look at the fear. The good news is that there are ways to work through our fears including getting professional help from skilled therapist who specialize in helping us overcome those fears. For me the most interesting part of our fears is that they are often times unfounded in that we we not literally in any danger.
Here are some logical ways to address your fears:
1. Admit your fear: Be completely honest with yourself and at least one other person about your fear. The moment you admit your fear you will find that you will feel a sense of relief. Hiding it will only make it darker and deeper, not to mention make you feel as though you need to be ashamed.
2. Believe and be patient: Have faith in yourself and know that you will be able to overcome this fear in the same way you have worked through other fears in your life. Believe that you have the skills and wisdom to overcome the fear with support, love, compassion and self-work. Above all be patient with your self. Being kind and gentle with your inner child will go a long way.
3. Take the small steps: You don't have to take large steps right away. Take little steps that will help you face the fear in small increments. Only you know what you are capable of doing and you just have to do those small things that will help you face your personal fear.
4. Face your fear: Eventually the goal must be to face the fear by doing something that addresses your fear head on. If it is fear of flying then you must one day book a flight somewhere on an airplane. If it is social anxiety you will need to go to an occasion where there is a group of people and do your best to socialize with others. It may be that your little step is to get dressed up to go to a party and even get in the car and arrive at the party. You may stay there for only fifteen minutes but that is a step in addressing that fear.
5. Get professional and personal support: If you feel you need some professional support then make it a goal to get that help you need from someone who is skilled at helping you address the fear. Google your resources, finding someone in your area that offers this type of professional therapy. You may also want to find one person in your life that will be your support and simply be there to hear what you have to say, admitting to that person what your fear is and why you feel that fear.
6. Write down the action steps: We cannot overcome our fears if we are not willing to take action. Action steps are always multifaceted: Spiritual, Physical, Emotional, Creative, and Financial. When we pray daily about our fears we are taking a spiritual action step. When we see a counselor or write in a journal on an ongoing basis we are addressing the emotional aspect of our fear. The action steps you take are directly correlated to your fears.
It may not be the time to face your fears head on but you can take some small steps. Give yourself a chance to lovingly address your fear and be patient and kind to your self. You can overcome your fear and if you think about it you have already overcome other fears, even if they were ones you faced as a child. Know that you have the tools and the courage to do it. Above all know that nothing can be more important than living your life fearlessly and completely.
