Simple Decorating Tips

If you are one of the people in my life that has seen my homes you would know that for me it is more than a place to sleep and eat.  For many a house is just a place to hang their hat and often times very little apart from eating and sleeping is done in their house.  Their house is simply not a home because the way a house becomes a home is very intentional.  Here are some decorating tips for your home that will make it feel like much more than a house:

1. Choose colors that are soft and beautiful and express your personality: I am not apposed to some beautifully done red walls in a dining room rich with woods and a chandelier that is traditional.  Red can look beautiful as long as it is the right shade of red, but most of the time I would suggest softer colorations.  It use to be called pastel colors and I happen to be a fan of the pastel greens, blues and aquas.  Soft colors make a wonderful backdrop to a variety of styles of furniture and accessories.  They can also feel soothing for the person living inside the home.  Soft coloration makes an elegant statement every time.  When selecting colors it is a good idea to pick two or maximum three colors that will tie the whole home together and create a flow from one room to another.  Consider the items in your home when you select a color for your walls.  For example you can pick a color of wall that goes well with the pillows on the sofa.  Usually it is the accessory items that are the best choice for selection of colors.

2. Collaboration from room to room: A home that flows from one room to the next is one that continues a style and colors that match well in each room.  If the living room has black leather sofas you may consider some other pieces in the master bedroom that have some black in them.  If your main area in your home is tan and white then it would be best to use that coloration in other areas of your home.  This creates a flow and simply makes sense.  In addition to color the style of your home from room to room should collaborate and make sense together.  A very hard modern living room with a transition country dining room is not collaborative nor does it make any sense.

3.  Create Balance: I discovered long ago that balance in every room is important.  If you have a black shade on a lamp on one side of the room you should consider using black in another area of the room with another items like a chrome end table with a black lacquered top.  Balance is created when you take the color of an item and you duplicate it on some other place in the room, preferably the other end.

4. Making a Space Unique: One of the most simple ways to make a space unique is by mixing it up a bit.  A room with slipcovered transitional sofas can look more contemporary by using a modern floor lamp next to the sofa.  Traditional peices can look updated and cool when you add an accessory that is modern.  I love to give a room a pop of modern with a lamp or a vase.  I also think that a room that I got be otherwise bland can look great with a pop of color.  I added orange to a room with whtie slipcovered sofas and aqua based pillows and walls.  I even took a large pendant lamp and sprayed it orange creating a more whimsicle and fun mood.

5. Hide the Audio and the cords: I am not a fan of cords and audio equipment.  I say hide as much of that as possible and if you must have a television have it installed professionally to the wall and have the cords run down the inside of the wall, creating a clean look.  The less attention audio equipment gets the better so get a cabinet with doors that provide a hidden space for your VCR, receiver and other audio equipment.  The truth is that this stuff is just not pretty.  Chose the outlet closest to a lamp and use a tie for cords to tie it to the shortest length possible.  Not every cord can be hidden but most times one can make it so that there is a minimum of cords spread accross a room or floor.

6. Accessories of three: I have found that groups of three accessories look more attractive than two.  Three objects can be situated more creatively.  When using accessories like vases, framed pictures, statues or plants they should be married into each other.  In other words the position of the objects should interface each other.  There are exceptions but often times having objects interact with each other looks more interesting and beautiful.  Even two of the same hurricanes for candles should be place one slightly in front of the other with a part of each one interfacing.

I believe that the most important part of one's life is our home.  I want to say that giving your home lots of love means putting thought into it, making your house a home.
