8 Decorating Tips that Cannot Fail
I love to decorate and have been asked to do it for others. It is something that has come natural to me and over time I have learned some basic premises about decor that can be helpful to others and save any space from looking bad. There are those of us who are talented at sewing while others are talented at singing. Not everyone knows how to decorate but if you follow some simple tips you cannot go wrong.
1. Harmony: harmonize every room using a theme of style and color. Rooms should flow easily into one another and should feel like they are all rooms in the same house or space. The easiest way to dothis is to select two or three colors and use them in different ways in all the rooms with all the objects. Start by deciding the color of walls and stick to one or two basic colors. In an open space use the same color and in spaces like bedrooms use colors that are in the same family of color. Staying on the light side is best: soft blues, soft greens and tans are a sure way to make a space look beautiful and balanced. Now days there are more homes that are "open concept" where the kitchen, living area and dining area are all in one room, not separated by walls. Depending on how you want your home to look: beach like, modern, soft or spacious, chose a wall color that is neutral enough to go with everything. If you have not decided on the furniture stick to pastel and light shades of color. When you chose the items for each room think harmony, how each room matches the next one means that it is in harmony. Again, stick to two or three colors, even one if you are unsure. The bedding, the towels, the sofa fabric, the area rugs and the pillows should all feel like they belong in the same home. Repeating color in each room is an easy way to harmonize each room and make it feel connected.
2. Lighting is essential: use lighting in the right areas of each room: next to the bed on each side, next to a chair where you may read, at the end of a sofa, between sofas, on a console table or on top of a dresser. Lighting can be as simple as silver with white shades in each room or a soft color of porcelien with a white shade. By keeping lighting simple with white, glass, silver or even black you don't have to worry about it clashing. Clear bases, silver bases, wood bases are all neutral and fit in with almost any furniture. There should be a variety of types of lighting in a room: pendant, floor lamps, table lamps and even a fancy chandelier if you would like one. The important thing is to light a room in different parts of the room to create an astatic that is beautiful and balanced. In a bedroom there could be two lamps on small dressers next to each side of the bed and then a floor lamp next to the dresser. There could even be a small lamp on top of the dresser drawers or on the counter portion of the sink in a bathroom. Creating an effect with lighting is easy when you use them under cabinets in a kitchen or behind a sofa or underneath a plant streaming up. Lighting can be dramatic but subtle is best. Harsh loud lighting is not my cup of tea but for some a closet needs some hard lighting or in a bathroom over a mirror for applying make up. Lighting needs to serve a purpose like those or like for reading. think about where you need lighting for effect and for use. Lighting is functional but must also add beauty to a room.
Marry objects: What I mean is when you use objects make them connect with each other. Don't simply sit a candle holder next to the other one but rather take one of them and place it so that it interacts with the other candle holder, a little to the left or to the right of the first one. If you add a vase place it in back of the candle holders so that the holders are interacting with the vase. Placing things side by side is not as interesting as intertwining them. Groups of three often look creative together whether they are interacting or just placed in a row spaced evenly between each other. Know how to marry objects/make them interact. It looks interesting and it looks pretty when you do this. If you use a blue object in one part of the room try to repeat it in another part of the room in a different object. By repeating the color you marry it into the room.
Balance the objects in the room: Where you place the furniture in a room is very important. The room should have it's furnishings spaced around the room. A tiny chair across a large screen TV may not make as much sense as a sofa. Two love seats across from one another balances a room and looks pleasing to the eye. The objects should be balanced and there has to be some space for people to move around in the room. How the objects are spaces is crucial. There needs to be a balance of the objects that makes sense when people are in the room interacting with each other. This is called a conversation space.
