Some Fashion Tips
There are so many mistakes people make with fashion. One of them is not knowing fashion and what is appropriate for them. The other is people who don't care about how they look. It sounds sad but being clueless about fashion or how to use it to your advantage, maximizing your looks. Even the most mediocre person can look great with the right fashion statement. It should not be expected that everyone knows how to dress and what looks good on them. It is not really that hard if we know the basics:
1. Buy the basic items for your start up wardrobe:
A navy jacket: year round fabric, usually wool
Tan slacks: one dressy wool and one cotton
A black suit or dress
Black shoes or heels
A white shirt or blouse
Basic nude/black nylons or socks
Black winter coat and rain coat
A nice scarf or some beautiful scarves
A tweed blazer
Black pants/skirt or both
2. Seek a good fit:
A good fit is a garment that is not too tight and not too loose. Fit is everything and if it looks too tight it is too tight and if it appears to be big it is. Many people dress in clothing that is way to large, especially men and woman who are conservative. Ask someone to tell you what they think of the fit. Usually people who sell clothing know enough to answer this basic question with honesty. Always try things on and look at them in a three way mirror.
3. Don't ignore color:
Be sensitive to the colors that look good on you and stand out. Usually the right colors will pop on you and your skin will stand out. If you are very pale white may not look as good on you as a person who is darker. If you are darker there are some dark colors that don't look as good on you as others. Try every color at least one time, being adventurous about the colors you wear. Color makes a big difference and wearing the optimal color for you is half the battle of dressing beautifully.
4. Look for stretch or nylon:
It is more comfy to wear a garment that has a little stretch to it. This can come in the form of spandex or lycra. Jeans that have a little lycra are more comfortable and tend to look even better because the lycra tucks some of your sins in. Nylon makes wool less likely to pill and makes a garment stronger and longer lastin. Nylon is a great "bullet proof" fabric as I call it. I find that when I have bought a sweater with nylon it keeps it's fit better as well.
5. Just because it is in style doesn't mean it's for you:
Understand that just because something is in fashion does not mean it is for you. You have to really know what is right for you and again asking someone else helps. Some fashion is geared to the younger crowd while some is geared to the more seasoned people. I don't use the word old because I don't believe in it. Some seasoned men and women look great in fashion geared to "juniors". We have to know what looks good on us in the world of fashion. There is American fashion like Ralph Lauren while on the other end of the scale Gucci which is much racier and faster fashion. There is classic fashion and then there is European fashion. I have also found that one can wear a plaid shirt, navy blazer and tan pants and look high fashion depending on the fabric, color and fit of each peice.
6. Look closely at Fabric:
I was raised by a seamstress hence my love and attention to fabric: silk, taffetta, wool, tropical wool, cotton, polyester, satin and a mixture of fabrics. Some fabrics breath better and in hot weather this is important to note. Think cotton and linen are great in hot weather while polyester is less favorable in hot weather. Look closely at your fabrics and wear ones that are comfortable and match the season. Some fabric also lays better than others. While taffetta is stiff and used more for wedding dresses, tropical wool is more fluid and soft. It will move with you. Cotton is absorbent. Silks are difficult in very hot weather because it tends to stick and not breath well. Look closely at fabric. Pick the right ones for you and for the weather.
