Grace and Frankie
There is a new show on Netflix called "Grace and Frankie: with Lilly Tomlin and Jane Fonda. It begins with a dinner date that their husbands set up at the same time at the same place. Both women speculate as to why this special double date and meeting at this particular restaraunt. When they arrive one of the husbands announces that they are in love with each other and that they are both gay. After that things get more and more fun, some of it unpredictable. Once the situation sets in the women become more accepting of the fact and they start to move into their new lives. They turn out to get the beach house that reminds me a lot of the Hampton's and the homes there, decorated in that seashore style that is beautiful and inspired my home decor. But once again I digress.
I am happy that there is a show on TV, all be it on Netflix that expresses the love of two men for one another and who dare at their ripe age to pursue that love. For me it has been much too long and there are much to little shows on TV like this one. I am still waiting for a family show that is like the Cosby's but with two dads instead, focused completely on the fact that there is this family with gay parents and their kids. I would like things to happen in this show that are normal issue that kids have and on occasion that there be funny parts to it. A show that feels more like a normal family and depicts a family that is just like all the others. It would be more normal than Modern family although I like that show is great too.
I have been waiting a long time to feel like who I am is OK, in fact more than OK and this show truly does that for me. We are still being treated like second class citizens in many states and even with the right to marry is it not federally acknowledged. We are living in a bit of an illusion that we have the exact rights that others do because we don't. There are even people who believe that we are still in a struggle with God and the bible when we marry same sex couples. That we are ruining the "sacred" idea of marriage. Yet on this show one of the former couples adopted a black child. He is gay and has a white partner who is loved as if he was their child as well. It is the way life should be but unfortunately we are still struggling with.
Life as we know it as gay men has been a struggle but we are rising up. We must continue to rise up and be counted, refusing to be ignored. We must try to get the courage to speak up and be who we are without fearing how others respond to us to react to us. Living our true self as gay men is imperative and our health depends on embracing every aspect of who we are. This show, Grace and Frankie addresses some of the crucial parts of the way society reacts to gay couples and the idea of marriage and normalcy. I for one am looking forward to that day.
