Gifts From A Daughter
Today is my birthday and I slept in late so that I might have the energy to go to dinner tonight and possibly go and listen to some music at a nice club. I feel a surge of gratitude when I see that I have 125 messages on FB wishing me a Happy Birthday. Of course the email from my daughter was the most special message where she refers to my courage and how I have been able to overcome so much in my life. She speaks of her love for me and wishes me a happy day. I think of what a gift both she and her sister are to me. I have lived all my life hearing all these beautiful compliments from my daughters who believe me to be the most handsome, the best and most talented man. Even if not all of what they say is true all the time I admit that it feels wonderful.
I believe that fathers who have daughters have a built in special life filled with extra love. When my daughters say they are daddy's girls my heart soars and when I am around them I always feel very special. My daughters were raised by a mother who was not just a good person but a mother who made certain that her children knew their dad and loved him just as he was. Even when there were times when I thought I did not merit it my children and their mother always honored me and gave me a special place and title. Through all of my own growth and tribulations my daughters loved me and respected me.
Today what I know best is how valuable my reaaltionship with my kids and grandkids is for me. It has literally kept me alive and made me understand that life is about family and that not everything is about me. I have grown to become less insular and more willing to love without conditions. They have taught me that and more. Today, on my 62nd birthday I am in deep appreciation for having a breath and for being in a state of mind and body with a will to live. It is my daughters who have brought light to my life and helped me to have the courage to get through more than a few situations in my life, health related and emotional. Their spirit of love has lifted me above the darkness and their nurturing has helped me to overcome things I could not have overcome alone.
If you have a daughter I want to encourage you to share how much they mean to you and to build a relationship with them that is connected, active and loving. Be thankful and express your appreciation for them. Spend time with your daughters as you are the person in their life that will mold their perception of men. Their future choices depends on how you treat them and the relationship you have with them. Daughters are a gift to fathers and there is really no other way to put it.
Thank you Taina Luz Rosa-Collazo and Camille Marie Collazo. I feel honored to dedicate this blog to both of you and acknowledge your incredible contributions to my life.
