Silence Will Heal You
Silence may not heal everything about you but it will help heal the emotional pain inside us. By taking the time to be silent we honor our selves and we say yes to a time of healing. We cannot heal with chatter and we cannot heal by keeping busy in spite of what we may think. Even if we are busy all day long we will come to a place where we are left with our feelings and those feelings need to be acknowledged, honored and then given a chance to heal. By becoming silent every single day we are giving our heart, spirit, mind and body a chance to heal. We are saying that we are important enough to take the time to address things that is ailing us.
The way to hold silence is to first find a private and comfortable place and close your eyes. Lay down flat on a mat or rug. Once you have done this take a few deep breaths via your nose (count to 10), hold each breath in (count to 4), and exhale through your mouth (force it all the way out). By taking the time to breathe you are relaxing your body. If music helps play only mediation music without lyrics or words. Sit in silence for a minimum of 10 minutes and increase the time as you practise it more to 20 minutes. After 30 days see how you feel.
We can walk and take the time to be silent. We can honor ourselves by being silent because this is a time to quiet every noise and every distraction in or life. For some of us a walk in nature alone helps us to become more clear. A good friend of mine lives near a forest preserve and she takes the time to walk through the paths between the trees to find her inner peace. This is a good way to become silent and at the same time get a little exercise while we are at it. Taking a walk in a quiet area can be just as healing as holding silence at home. The key to it all is to be completely silent which means we do zero talking even to ourselves.
When we practise daily silence we are giving our spirit and mind a chance to clear. We are letting go of the outer noises and the outer influences. We are not being distracted by anything: a TV, a magazine, loud music or any other distraction. We simply create a space to be quiet and to allow ourselves to experience peace and serenity, something we all need. When we hold silence we gift ourselves with a chance to just be and to love who we are. Silence is our teacher as well because in our silence there may come a message. It is in that silence, reverence and sacred space that the message will come through to us.
