Gratitude
Today is a day when many families get together and celebrate a national holiday, Thanksgiving. Many of us will at one point in the celebration thank God for family, love and the abundance of food we will be consuming. Many of us begin the day with a mental list of what we are grateful for yet this is something we can do every day. Living our life in gratitude is living our life with a particular sense of thankfulness. It is Thanksgiving today and giving thanks today is wonderful but what about the rest of the days? For every day we are alive is a day to be grateful.
We can and should begin a regimen each day of listing what we are grateful for even if we do this by stating what we are grateful for silently or writing it in a journal. It is a well known fact that when we are in a state of thanks we tend to be happier and life unfolds in a more positive way. The other side of this is when we are in a constant state of complaint about the things going on in our life and we only want more, not being happy with what we already have. When we are ungrateful for what we have the universe makes sure we don't get more of what we want.
There are many children who were born into wealth. Some have a false sense of entitlement based on the fact that they have always had everything they want and in some case much too much for them to handle. There are some who feel as though they are better than other children who don't have as much as they do or who may not be able to afford the clothing they wear. Parents who are wealthy are at times the very reason their child feels a false sense of superiority and that they deserve more. In some cases children lash out at their parent when he or she does not comply by purchasing something they want like a Rolex watch or a new iPhone. Gratitude has nothing to do with how wealthy we are but in our society we place a lot of emphasis on money and material things. As we list those things we are grateful for we must begin with those things that cannot be sold or bought like the love of family or the fact that we overcame an illness.
We all know people who are ungrateful for the love we share or the kindness we demonstrate towards them. Those are the people that we need to rethink our relationships with. It may very well be that someone in our life does not understand gratitude and our giving too much to them is only feeding their ego. Living in gratitude is a way of life that has no room for others who do not appreciate us. Seeing this with clarity will provide us with the space to simply live a beautiful and full life. One that is in awareness for what we have that is really valuable.
Sharing with others by serving others is one of the best ways to demonstrate our gratitude to our spirit and our souls. Yet what we must understand is that there will be people who expect it and are not grateful. For this reason we must find a place and a situation that best fits us and the gifts we have to offer.
Live in gratitude every day not just today, not just once a year. Live in gratitude for the love and abundance of kindness in your life. Be thankful for your children, your spouse, your neighbor and the person who checks your groceries. When you live in a state of gratitude every day you are truly alive.
