How To Get That Job
If you have had trouble finding a job it could very well be that you are missing some skills that will land you that job of your dreams. Becoming and implementing interview skills is as important as your qualifications if not more because let's face it there are many qualified people applying for the same job. In a world where jobs have become scarce we must stand out from the others. Here are some ways you can do just that and land that job:
Dress appropriately (including grooming) for the job or a level above:
Wearing the right clothing is likely the most important aspect of an interview. This is what others see immediately and it must be impeccable and appropriate if not exceed the job expectations of dressing. The very best color to wear is in fact still navy blue and the most simple and attractive way to dress is in a suit whether you are female or male. A great navy suit is worth investing in and can be paired up with a white blouse or shirt. Men should add a basic rep striped tie to their interview outfit. There are of course many combinations of clothing one can wear but navy suits are safe and mainstream. Your overall grooming should also be impeccable: hair, nails, makeup, brows and all things having to do with presentation. Lastly, your shoes should be black, shiny clean, conservative and closed. Men should wear navy or black dress socks. Although some interviews may dictate a less dressy version of a navy suit like navy pants and a white shirt or blouse there needs to be much care taken to look great and it definitely enhances your chances.
Get to the interview early:
In order to always be on time it is best to give yourself extra time to get to your interview. If you make this your practice you will arrive a little early every single time regardless of traffic or the weather. When you work somewhere your supervisor will expect you to leave your home early when the weather or traffic dictates it. Leave early even if you wait in your car for a few minutes. This will avoid you arriving late and giving the message that you will be late to work.
Do your research on the company or organization:
Do your homework and find out about the company you are interviewing with. Have some facts you can share if you need to or are asked. One of the questions that you will be asked often is: "Why did you pick our company?" and this is when some facts about the company will be useful if not very important. Your knowing some information about them will gain points for you.
Be enthusiastic and ask questions:
No matter how you feel have an enthused voice and demonstrate that you are excited. Ask questions that are pertinent when you are asked or ones you deem important. People who interview others like to think that you are interested in what they offer and that you are smart enough to ask the right questions.
Be confident not arrogant:
Be confident but careful not to be arrogant. Watch your body language and make sure it is not saying arrogant. Sit up straight and look at the person interviewing you in the eyes with kindness in your heart. Set the vocal tone to match your human side and one that is modest and kind. Smile if you sense that what is being shared with you deems it.
BE polite and thank the person who interviews you:
Always thank others for giving you the "opportunity" to interview for the job. Be polite and listen for clues that may be asking you to show your good manners. Don't forget to shake the person's hand before you leave and let them know "it was a pleasure to meet you".
Send a card and make a call back ASAP
After an interview send a thank you card and make that follow up call. Show that you are interested in the job if in fact you are interested.
State your assets:
Don't be afraid to share your talents and skills at the appropriate time. You will likely be asked this question: "What makes you believe you are qualified for this job?". Be prepared to answer that common question. Be careful not to go on and on but rather state those assets you feel are ones that are aligned with the job your are seeking to get. Don't forget your people skill are important aspects of your work related skills.
Here you have it folks. Now go forth and get that dream job!
