You Are Not Your Story
You are not your story, not the old story at least. Our stories consist of all the things that have happened to us that were not pleasant or difficult. They are the stories of emotional and physical abuse and for some sexual abuse. Our stories are our experiences with death and loss. Our past can be filled with incidents of injury and not so good things and like most of us some very hard times. We believe that we are those stories and what happens is we live as if those things that happened define us and for some of us it is a life long struggle. We believe that we cannot find our way out of our stories and that these stories are our destiny. This of course is a self-fulfilling attitude and because of our thinking we end up stuck in our stories, our past, our bad experiences.
The life that we create from the life that we live and the things we overcome is our real story. This story is the one we make happen by letting go of the old story. It is our new, redefined story and the one that we choose rather than the one that we allow to rule us. The new story is one that has to be influenced by hope and it is one where we understand that good things and not so wonderful things happen to all of us. No one has a perfect life story and most of us go through the tough times. It is what we do after each bad experience that will lift us out of the old story and into the new life we want to live, focused on the future and letting go of the past pain.
You and I are not our stories, at least not every aspect and part of it. We are not our downfalls and our failures but rather people who have overcome things in life and have come up the other end. Our old story becomes blurry and what comes into focus is our new one. We begin to create a new story when we learn from our pain and we have the courage to start a new story again and again. We will experience the pain again and for this very reason it is imperative to be willing to get up time and time again when we fall.
Living life in our old story keeps us from living the new one. Being ever present is the most crucial part of living fully. Never allowing your old and hurtful experiences to make us feel less than and unworthy. By living in our new story we impede the new one. Live your new story, live in the moment, live right now, let go of the old story and begin to live the new one.
Writing Exercise.
Write down your old story. Get all the crappy things out of you that happened to you. All the painful stuff and all the hurting experiences. Do this for about ten or fifteen minutes. Vomit it out as if you were literally ill. Use any language you need to use or feel you want to use. Be descriptive and specific. Breath through it and be as honest and complete as you can.
Now write your new story. This is the story that you want more of and the things that you are yearning for. In your new story describe all the wonderful things that will and are happening to you as if you were completely sure, all the things that you want to happen to you. Don't hold back and let it out with joy in your heart.
Now burn your old story and save your new one. Read the new one every time you need to and feel you want to. Reinforce your new story by repeatedly thinking about it and seeing it happen as if you know one hundred percent that this new story will be your life story.
