How to Make Your Home a Sanctuary
I believe that all of us who live in a home have the potential to make it sacred, a sanctuary. We spend a lot of time at home it we are in the group of people who are normal In fact we spend the same amount of time at home or more than in any other place, including work. Or at least we should. There have been so many people who do not consider their home a sanctuary or sacred in any manner. Some are hoarders and others are simply people who don't place any importance on home and hearth. There are many Americans who live basically like animals in environments that are dirty and even unhealthy at risking their children in the interim. There are children who live in places that no one should have to live in, embarrassed to have friends over due to the condition that their mothers and fathers live in. We don't have to leave the United States to experience situations that are not sanitary and that are in fact frightening. How we make our home our sanctuary is not as important as why. Why we make our home our sanctuary is so that we live in a manner that is meant to be, sacred and as goddess would want it for us. I try to nor be in judgement of others yet it saddens me when people live in a home where the plaster is inside the bathtub and on top of their dining room table where they are suppose to eat.
How do we make our home our sanctuary?:
Your viewpoint of home:
First we must see our home as a sacred and important space that we must tend to and love so that it will serve us optimally. If we don't see our space as sacred then we will not bother to nurture it, make it beautiful or keep it clean. It is the mind set that we start with that creates a beautiful home that is different for different people but that is universally respected and tended to.
The Things you select:
Select things for your home that are accessories that express who you are, what you like and what you believe in. Examples of these wonderful objects could be boxes from Asia, artifacts that are African or tables that are mosaic. In others it is a decor that is Bohemian and could include floor pillows and futons. I love French country mixed with modern. I also love vintage modern looks. Making a home express what we feel inside motivates us to love it and take care of it. You must surround yourself with things you love;Art, artifacts, area rugs, baskets and all that is meaningful to you like family pictures or hanging the baptismal gown from when you were a baby inside a shadow box frame in your baby's room. Make it your own in every sense of the word.
Tending to it daily:
Loving your home means you tend to it daily. You are in a constant task to keep up with the cleanliness of your home. You can hire someone to help keep it clean but it is imperative that you keep up with your home and like someone you love you love it daily. This does not mean perfection of obsession. It means keeping up with the home and putting away things after usage and wiping a table when needed. It is only difficult if you allow it to get out of hand.
Blessing you home;
There are people like reverends and spiritual leaders that will bless your home but you can do this on your own using sage or simply making up a ritual of blessing. You can do this with your family or alone. You can use prayer in your blessing of your home. You can make up your own words that bless your home. State them out loud and go from room to room blessing each one and expressing your appreciation for each one as you go along. For example if you were blessing your child's room you may say something like: "I bless my child Mia's room that it be a safe place where she finds peace and joy daily".
Set it up:
Set up your furniture in ways that invite conversation and invite others to come and enjoy your home. Make it a comfy place in areas where you can do that and where you and your family can put their feet up on ottomans and sit in a sofa that envelope them. Set it up in a way that makes sense and try different configurations until one feels good to you. It is important that things in a room feel balanced and set up in a place where it makes sense for watching TV, having guests chat or enjoying music.
