Perks of Being Alone
I think it is high time we talk about the wonderful advantages of being alone, being single and living our own life. I am a bit disturbed by this idea that one has to be coupled in order to be validated and it often times seems that way. Every where I go people ask me about the ring on my finger as if to try to figure out if I am married. I wear it because I consider myself married to myself. I consider myself married to Elliott and for once in my life I am accepting being alone and being lonely sometimes. The fact remains that you can be along even if you are coupled. Being alone is a wonderful experience where you do what you want when you want and live as you like it best not concerned with someone elses approval. The main perk of living alone is just doing what we want when we want to and loving it.
I take myself to the show and to dinner often. Living alone motivates me to go out and treat myself to a nice dinner at Francesca's and then go to the Marcus theater for a feel good love movie. Living alone does not have to be a lonely experience or a stagnant experience where you sit around all day and do nothing. Do things that bring you some light and fun like shopping, dinner out, a nice movie on Netflix with some Skinny Pop. Enjoy your life to the fullest by taking yourself out on dates to the museums or art institutes. Take a road trip to visit a friend or a vacation to Mexico. Don't be afraid to go on a trip alone. Going on trips is a great perk of being alone and single. Do it while you can.
When we are alone we pick the time we go to bed and when to get up on weekends. We select the kind of music we like and the type of movies we love, even pick the flowers we like the best. It creates a flow in our life that we make up and that we control. We meditate when we feel the feeling and we stop talking when we need silence. We don't ask permission for anything and we get to do as we please all the time. Given the poor communication in many relationships living alone and communicating to ones self is a fun experience. You get to feel and think all those things you want to think about without a censor.
Being alone gives us the chance to work on ourselves. We can take a class, read a great self help book or start a business. It is during these alone times that many people have accomplished things they'd never have done if they were with someone pulling on their sleeve or with someone who required too much of their attention. Being alone gets the creative juices flowing without any interruptions. This is a great time to look inside and find out what it is that will bring you success, happiness, joy and abundance. This is also a time to search your spiritual parts and access your highest potential.
Make a list of your perks around being alone. Look at your list and express gratitude around for each perk or advantage of being alone. Write a few sentences about that perk and how it will work for you and how it is what needs to be. Keep your list handy for those times when you feel lonely. Make another list of the disadvantages of being in a marriage or serious relationship living with someone like having to make dinner or wash more clothing, even having to get home right after work or going to bed at a certain time. The feeling of obligations in a relationship alone are reason enough to feel happy about being single. Single and happy I might add.
