Soft Addictions: Gambling

Gambling is another one of those addictions that have found a place inside the social circle and there are even places where you can go where there is one gambling casino after another and rows of exciting light shows. Any person who dreams of winning a lot of money is the same  person who is chasing after a dream they feel they cannot have until they win a lot of money.  In fact they have put their life goals on hold until they pull that slot and the money pours out of a slot machine.  The even softer approach to gambling is playing the lottery.  We buy tickets from a machine or person in hopes of hitting it big.  We think if and when this happens we will be happy and live a life of abundance.  The thing we miss is that we are already abundant and have just enough of what we need and that our chances of becoming financially abundant by gambling are slim to none.  In fact most people who gamble don't win.  That is the objective of every casino and every lotto game.  The very slim chance that they will need to pay anyone money helps keep this soft addiction one that is porfitable for them but not so much for us.  Yet with everyone knowing this fact, we continue to play games that we are surely going to lose at.  Our chances of winning are so slim we are better off attempting to invent something and become successful that way or opening a business.  I use to say I would rather take my chances selling pencils in New York. After all everyone could us a pencil and if the pencil is attractive I would likely make more doing that than gambling my earnings in Las Vegas.

The reason we gamble is because we are looking for an easy way to make money and hope it will be a lot of it.  We think that if we gamble a few dollars we might possibly become wealthy human beings.  The fact is that we rarely win and the fact is that we are wasting some hard earned energy we could be placing into something more lucrative where chance is not so much of a factor.  It is truly exiting to think we could become a millionaire overnight if we get the right numbers on our lottery ticket.  It is exciting to think that if we bet ten dollars we might win one thousand dollars, but the fact remains that this is not the end of the story and is not usually the case.  Gambling is a waste of time and it would be best not to place our hopes on making money or finding our joy in money.

Healing from gambling is huge although we think that is it not.  Here are some ways to heal from this awful addiction:

1.  The reality is that there are 12 step programs because people who have this addiction need an outlet and support.  Gamblers anonymous helps those who would like to get rid of their addiction or at least work on letting it go.

2.  Letting go of gambling cold turkey is another way to start the process of healing from it.  Staying away from people and places that involve gambling and will expose us to it is best.

3.  Finding other activities to get involved in will help to take the focus off of gambling and place it in a more productive light, like a book club or a class we have been wanting to take.

4,  Redirect and Refocus!  Place your energy in meditating and  writing a journal about what you want to change in your life.  What is is that makes you feel that you need to gamble?  What are the things you would like more of in your life: family time, love relationship, spiritual wholeness.  Reflect on the things you really want to happen in your life rather than to focus on what is happening or projecting what will happen.  See the abundant parts of your life having nothing to do with money.  See the beauty in your life and measure it as prosperity.
