Who Are You?

It is important for us to know that response to this question.  Who are you?  Many times we respond with somewhat aloof answers like: "I am a social worker".  In reality that is now who you are that is what you do.  Some would say they are a mom but that is not really who YOU are.  A mom is a position you hold in a child's life and it is also not who you are.  When looking at who we are the answers may evade us because we think in terms of who we are so others, like being a mom or a wife or an employee.  Who we are has nothing to do with who we are in relation to others.  It can of course mean something to you yet who we really are should be about our personal self.  Some of the things we are could be:
A loving person
A wise person
A quiet person
A trustworthy person
A kind person
A person who lives with integrity

These are the things we authentically are.  We are not our job, our position in someone's life (like a spouse) or a profession.  Our deepest self has nothing to do with being someone's husband or wife.  Our deepest self is who we are in our core and our soul.

If I were to say who I am the proper responses might be:

I am a child of God
I am a compassionate man
I am a soulful person
I am a kind and generous individual
I am an honest person
I am a person of my word
I am a charitable man
I am a nurturing person
I am a proud Latino gay man
As you might note the things that I am have only to do with me and my character.  None are about who I in relationship to anyone or anything.  Who we are is simply who we are and who we are stands alone.  Who we truly are has nothing to do with what others think of us or the relationships we have with them.  Who we are is the core of our person.  It is our heart center and the wonderful traits we have.  It may be that we identify who we are as a father or a mother but we are not made up of a parent but rather we are a parent.  It does not make us any different from who we are.  We happen to be a parent.  Who we are is the deepest part of our being.  We are soulful, kind, talented, generous, spontaneous, creative, loving, spiritual and bold.  When you think of who you are don't go outside yourself to equate who you are, stay inside yourself.  Inside yourself is who you are.

Now it is time to write down who you are.  List ten things that demonstrate who you are.  YOUR characteristics and yours alone.  All by yourself.  Who you are is enough.  Who you are is important without the outside sources and positions or money you make.  Who you are is only your authentic being, human and soulful in spirit.
