Our Sacred Home
Today I would like to talk about the bathroom. In some way I find this area of the home the most relaxing. There we keep our bath oils, soap and soft towels to pamper ourselves. I think men need a little more coaching than women to create that spa experience that women and some men like me can appreciate. In my master bathroom there is always a candle and a back brush as well as a foot brush to scrub my back and feet. There are the towels on one rack that are there for display only and then hooks in back of the door for the everyday bath towels. The shower has two heads one of which is hand shower. I loved my former bathroom that had one shower head on each side and I would use both of them at one time. Of course for the romantically inclined the other shower can be for the other person we might want to share our shower with on occasion.
My bathroom has two sinks although rarely do two people use their sinds at the same time it is nice to have it in case that rare occassion happens. Over the sinks are some bright lights and double mirrors. Again, just in case one needs to share that area with someone else. Inside the shower there is a gadget that I use to wipe the access water off the shower doors to avoid mildue build up. I like a nice oatmeal soap and it is good for the skin. My shampoo is more organic and has an orange scent that is light and soft. I believe in having bath products that you love, feel good and are good for you. Some people don't put much into their products and I think it's very important to get the best bath products that you can afford or make your own. My sister uses olive oil as a base for her body lotions adding natural oils with a lovely frangrance. I think that is a great way to pamper yourself and use your bathroom for what it is made to be, a luxury experience, when you are feeling you want to have one.
The thing about our home and our bathrooms is cleanliness and how important it is to keep those bathrooms really clean. I keep products in the bathroom and a sponge to clean the bathtub with every time I use it. It is good upkeep and then the bathroom is always clean. I like the scrub bubbles in a spray bottle. It's fast, easy and less offensive. Of course there are more natural orange cleaning products that some of us prefer. The objective is to keep up with the bathrooms because they are the most important part of a home's resale value: that and kitchens.
The word sacred is a strong one I admit, but I believe it is a word and a motto of how to keep a home. Sacred to me means that your home means something important to those living in it. One cannot be alone in the care of a home when you live with others and for me that was a big ticket items as they say. Living with a person who did not care sbout the home was difficult for me on a daily basis. It insulted my spirit and insulted the notion that we must appreciate and care for what we have. Although this person will remain nameless I will say that the apple did not fall far from the tree. He was raised in a home where it looked like there was minimal care not only in the way it was cleaned but also the way it was decorated. There was not a feeling of uniqueness or love in that house. It was as I have kept reminding everyone, a house and not a home. It did not feel loved and nurutred. It lacked luster and it lacked love. It even lacked cleaning and dusting.
As I end this blog on home I want to be aplogetic to those who see their home as a house to sleep in. I don't agree with it but understand how many if not most people see their house as an object they own and a place to sleep and eat while avoiding being along and connecting with their house, making it more than a house but rather a beautiful home that serves them. I love my home. I don't see a structure but rather those things that I am surrounded with like a soft cushion or a little crystal egg shimmering against the walls on a sunny day. I see love and a place that takes good care of me and not just walls with colors. I see sea and shore in my home and even sand. The glimmer of the Chirstmas tree makes me smile because evcn that has meaning: family, the birth of Christ and joy to the world. My home means someting down to where the coffee maker is situated to where I set the orchid plant and the angle it is in. A home should be a place we respect and care for. When we share our home it is the artifacts that tell others what we love and value and the furnishings that invite them to relax and enjoy their stay for however short or long a time. It is the hand soap that tells them that you take care in making sure they cleanse their hands with something special and lovely just for them.
Your house can be a home too by takine the time to:
1. Choose art and artifacts that express who you are
2. Keeping it clean and organized
3. Creating areas that are comfortable
4. Creating areas that are sacred and spiritual, peaceful and serene
5. Utilizing colors that express the feeling you most want to feel: Lively, joyful, peaceful, resort like or maybe even ethnic and fun.
May you each see goddess in your space where you live and enjoy it as a sacred space where you spend time alone and with family.
